■ 季節の逸品 ■

節分が近づいてきましたね。節分と言えばお多福や鬼の面を思い浮かべます。
今回は、おおらかな表情が愛らしい『嵯峨面』をご紹介します。
嵯峨面は、嵯峨釈迦堂の大念仏狂言で使われる面に似せて、嵯峨の郷土土産
として作られていました。戦前戦後にかけて、一度廃れましたがそんな嵯峨
面を惜しみ、先代が復興されたのです。手法やわずかに残る文献を調べ、一
つ一つ出来た面を、知人に差し上げておられたのですが、地元のお店に置か
せてもらうようになり、面の種類も2・3種類だったものが徐々に増えていき
ました。河童や小督局(こごうのつぼね)等、嵯峨に関する題材から始まり干
支面等、今では30種近くにものぼります。
制作は張り子といわれる手法で、生漉き(きずき)和紙を使用します。大正以
降の洋紙ではさくく、型の凹凸や弱い所がもろく裂けるので、明治までの古
書を裁き面型にはり込んで作られています。それもなかなか手に入らなくな
ってきているそうです。裏を返すとお経や謡の字が見え、中でも「ちご面」
や「お多福面」にはやんわりとした、雰囲気がある「かな文字」の多い紙を
使用するなど、作者の気遣いとも言える意匠が反映されています。やがて型
からはずされた面は、乾燥を経て彩色に移ります。絵の具には、胡粉、砥粉、
墨、泥絵の具等を使い、赤一色でも4色ほどの顔料を混ぜ合わせ、一気に塗
らず、何度も色を重ねていきます。こうする事で、他にはない抑揚をつけ、
どこかムックリとした雰囲気を醸し出しています。
面作りをするにあたって張り子面の風合いや味わいを大切に作っておられま
ます。それは古いものをそのまま受け継いでいくのではなく、時代の流れを
感じ取り今の人の生き方や心を受け止めた物を色や装飾で表わしているそう
です。
実際同じ干支でもひと回り前の干支では、色合いや装飾が少し違うそうです。
面の内側に貼られた厄除御札から掛け紐のこよりまで手作りのお面。
嵯峨に訪れた際に、愛嬌のあるお面を手にとって見てはいかがでしょうか。

まだまだ天候の厳しい日が続いていますが、2月9日のスケジュールをご紹介
します。
1月28日 狸谷不動院 ・初不動
29日 岩清水八幡宮 ・鬼やらい
小豆粥の会 ・妙心寺、東林院
2月 1日 岩清水八幡宮 ・湯立神社
2〜3日 各寺院 ・節分祭
8日 上徳寺 ・継地蔵尊大祭
虚空蔵法輪寺 ・針供養
9日 山科区 小山 ・二九（にのこう）
２月と言えば、節分ですね。節分と言えば、「鬼は外、福は内」といって家
で炒り豆を撒くの光景が頭に浮かびます。この節分、なぜ「節分」と言うの
でしょう？
それは「季節の分かれ目」だから「節分」なのです。季節の分かれ目は年中
他にもあるじゃないかと言われるかもしれませんが、中でも冬から春にさし
かかるこの時期は、一年の境ととらえ、特に重要だと認識されてきました。
節分といえば鬼とそれを追払う豆。この風習は追儺（ついな）といい中国か
らきたもので、病や邪鬼を家から追い払う儀式でした。確かに寒くて窓や戸
が締めっぱなしだと、部屋の隅にモヤモヤしたものがこもっていそうな気が
します。そんな空気ごと炒り豆を撒いて追っ払います。
豆まきは古来日本で行われていましたが、追儺と一緒に行われるようになっ
たそうです。ついでに年の数+1個食べて体の中からも鬼はらいです。
市内の神社ではこの鬼払いの行事をやっているところが沢山あります。
狂言や、厄払いの行事もやっているところがあるので、お出かけしてみては
いかがでしょうか？

ここのところ暖かい日が続いたり、寒い日が続いたりしていますね。
今年は大雪が降ったり、突然3月のような気候になったかと思うとまた雪が
降ったりとお天気に惑わせられてばかり。先日鴨川べりのカフェで御茶を飲
んでいたら、百合かもめが二・三、群をなしてゆくのが見えました。東山を
背に白いかもめ達がふわり飛ぶ風景は、やはり都の冬の風物詩の1つだと思
います。
今回取り上げた、『嵯峨面』は、この時期、和菓子屋さんの店先にちょこっ
と、かかっていたりするのを見かけたりします。素朴な中に愛嬌のある表情
は、たとえ鬼でもどこか心を許してしまいそうな、愛らしさがあります。
冷たい風に負けないように頑張りましょう。
